Rolex Explorer Evolution 14270 to 114270 to 214270 Bob's Watches

It's the 114270 reference that was made between 2001 and 2010 (after the 14270 that introduced the "modern" Explorer style, and before the 214270 took the size up to 39mm for over a decade.) This one is from 2004 and the full set included the original purchase receipt (ยฃ1,950 - bargain!) I've never had a watch that I've enjoyed.

In 2016, Rolex made a surprising move by updating the Explorer ref. 214270 with longer and broader hands in addition to luminescent 3, 6, and 9 numerals, but kept the same reference number. In short, the Explorer ref. 114270 is the smaller and more classic version of the Explorer, while the Explorer ref. 214270 is the larger and more modern.

1. What I really like about the Rolex Explorer 114270 is it's understated, tough, but most of all, versatile. Arguably most referred to as the "One Watch" or the "Only Watch" you'll ever need. There is a certain nostalgia that goes with the Rolex Explorer. A true gentleman's watch. It's quiet enough to not show off, tough enough.

The Rolex Explorer 14270 was produced from 1989 until 2001, with subtle evolutions over its career (more on that below), before being replaced by the visually similar reference 114270. 2001/2010 - Rolex Explorer 114270. The Rolex Explorer 114270, launched in 2001 and discontinued in 2010, was the last of the "small" Explorer watches with.

#2 ยท Apr 4, 2020 The 114270 has SELs, a more modern movement and a super luminova dial. All that for not a whole lot more than the 14270. The five digit reference has a tritium dial, but it's kind of negated by the painted numerals. So any patina might look odd.
